Steps to Become a CPA in New York

The New York Board for Public Accountancy (the Board) oversees the process for becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state. There are five main steps to complete in order to earn a CPA license in New York.

  1. Complete 150 semester hours of college-level education in accounting.
  2. Accumulate the required hours of experience.
  3. Apply for a license.
  4. Pass the Uniform CPA Examination.
  5. Receive a CPA license.

1. Complete 150 semester hours of college-level education in accounting.

Candidates for CPA licensure in New York must complete 150 semester hours of college-level education in either a program that is registered and approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED); a master’s program in accounting that is accredited by the AACSB; or 150 semester hours that includes a bachelor’s degree and 33 semester hours in accounting, including one course each in:

  • Financial accounting and reporting
  • Auditing and attestation services
  • Cost or managerial accounting
  • Taxation

In addition to the above, at least 36 semester hours in general business coursework are required.

2. Accumulate the required hours of experience.

The Board requires prospective licensees to complete at least one calendar year of full-time experience amounting to at least 35 hours of work per week in accounting, excluding overtime. Candidates may also earn experience through part-time work of at least 20 hours per week across two years. Experience must be gained under the supervision of a licensed CPA. Work experience may be gained working in a public accounting firm, government, private industry, or educational institution. The work experience can be completed working in one of the following areas: accounting, attest, compilation, consultation, financial advising, management advising, or taxation. You can find more information on these requirements on the Board’s website.

3. Pass the Uniform CPA Examination.

New York uses the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) to administer and score the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Uniform CPA Exam. Candidates who are ready to test should have a transcript submitted directly to NASBA from their educational institution, pay the exam fee, and apply through the NASBA website. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 75 on all four sections of the exam within an 18-month rolling period to qualify for a license. The exam may be taken after completing the first 120 semester hours of study, provided you have completed one course in each of the areas mentioned in step 1. The results of the exam do not expire; however, if the exam was taken more than 10 years ago, 40 more hours of continuing education are required for licensure.

4. Apply for a license.

After receiving notification of a passing score on all four sections of the Uniform CPA exam and meeting all experience and education requirements, candidates may apply for the CPA license. Candidates should pay a first registration and initial licensure fee to the Board and submit the application. Along with their application, they will need to provide proof of education and supervised experience via other forms that can be found on the Board’s website.

5. Receive a CPA license.

Once all application materials are reviewed and approved, the Board will issue candidates a license number. Candidates will be entitled to practice from the effective date of licensure. Candidates may find out if their license has been issued by going to the Board’s online verification site and searching for their name. A license parchment and registration certificate will be mailed within two working days of the effective date of licensure.

CPA License Renewal and Continuing Education Information

Renewals for New York CPA licensees are on a triennial basis and contingent on the completion of at least 24 contact hours of continuing education per calendar year if concentrated in one of the recognized subject areas or 40 contact hours of continuing education per calendar year if combining subject areas. CPAs will also need to complete four hours of professional ethics courses every three calendar years. Additional information can be found on the Board’s website.

Student Review: “Overall, I had a positive experience with my accounting program in College of Staten Island’s School of Business. After graduation, my decision to study accounting in such a well-reputed college proved to be very advantageous. The program had a lot of accounting courses that allow graduates to have extensive knowledge of accounting, such as Introduction to Accounting (I and II), Intermediate Accounting (I and II) and Cost Accounting. Moreover, there are other courses I took that really helped when I applied for jobs after graduation, such as Federal Income Taxation and Managerial Finance. I figured out many accounting offices appreciate such experience.” -Student at College of Staten Island

Student Review: “The Bachelor of Science degree program at Hunter College met and exceeded my initial expectation. The professors are more than eager to assist you with any questions whether they’re course or real-world related problems. At the third and fourth year, I acquired an internship with JP Morgan through the school’s Career and Development Center. The internship allowed me to apply my classroom knowledge to solving real-life problems. I am now working as a personal banker at JP Morgan. I cannot thank Hunter College and my professors enough for their assistance in preparing me for my career.” -Amy H., student at Hunter College

Student Review: “The Iona College Hagan School of Business provided an in-depth and spectacular education for me while pursuing my accounting degree. The professors were more than helpful and approachable when it came to answering questions or assisting with problems. They were also all very professional with tons of experience and knowledge that were passed along to the students. The work definitely was not the easiest, but who learns when something is really easy? The professors were tough but fair. The hardest class probably was Tax Accounting. The course itself is naturally difficult and the professor was straightforward about it, which I enjoyed. It set the tone early on in the semester when taking that class that it won’t be a walk in the park. This led to me and my fellow classmates to work that much harder to better understand the information and pass. Strong friendships were made as well as the professors encouraged group work, which was definitely awesome. Overall, I had a good experience. The only downside was the textbooks could get rather expensive and sometimes the professor’s don’t utilize them as much, but that is pretty much the same at any school.” -Student at Iona College

Through classes like financial accounting to auditing courses, I was able to experience how people deal with financial statements, bank reconcilements, and many other concepts. Not only are the professors excellent in assisting every student with the knowledge that will be required in large companies, but they take the time out of their lives to help us out. Student Review: “Stony Brook has a pretty broad program for business and even though their requirements for the program have a set G.P.A, overall the program has excellent professors. As a student in the accounting program, I wasn’t a fan of the fact that most classes had a recitation class as well as a lecture. Lectures were pretty good even though it was a huge class with one professor and a large lecture hall. What I didn’t like was that the recitation classes were mainly dealt with by graduate students that didn’t have a proper grasp of the material. I also took a few marketing classes as electives and had loads of fun with them because our professor was someone that had loads of connections in the real world.” -Student at Stony Brook University
